Students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes each night as part of their nightly homework. Your child must take their reading book home each night and bring it back to school the next day. Students may also take AR quizzes as they feel they are ready during independent work time, recess, before and or after school. We will go to the library every Tuesday. Please make sure your child does not leave his/her book at home especially on that day.
AR Goals and Expectations
Each trimester your child will be given a required number of points to achieve by the end of the trimesters. As part of the expectation, your child must read 4 non-fiction titles and score 80% or higher on the AR Quiz. You may access your child’s Accelerated Reader (AR) page on our Cullen website using your child’s username and password.
Will you be a Cullen Accelerated Reader Millionaire?
Cullen Elementary School launched a school wide program last year to encourage students to read to a million words. The criterion is based on words read and students must maintain an A.R. quiz average of 70% or higher. In my classroom, if after each trimester your child meets their goal, he/she will receive an A.R prize. Listed below are the "words read" goals for my classroom, and there is no limit on how many books or words a child can read. I would love to see some of my third graders become A.R. Millionaires this year. Should a child not meet their goal by the end of first trimester, they can continue to work toward meeting it. Once the first trimester goal is met, even if it is during the 2nd trimester, a prize will be awarded. I want everyone to participate and be rewarded for their efforts. Go Pirates!
First Trimester: 333,333 words
Second Trimester: 333,333 words
Third Trimester: 333,334 words
